This will be a post regarding the recent commencement of the MASSIVE award campaign of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2. Beginning with the video posted above, the campaign is well underway. WB has also sent a book of images/critical responses/FYC categories to Academy members, beating, “We are serious, dammit!” into each one of their brains. Some say it’s pathetic that a film this widely known (3rd highest grossing film ever) should have to campaign this seriously, because if the film was really that good, it would already be a serious contender.
Which is bullshit, by the way. Every producer, every actor, every composer needs to work their asses off to get their nominations. If the film is great, even better. But the studio still needs to keep the buzz up, especially if it was released earlier in the year, as Potter was.
At this point, I really can’t say if I truly believe that Potter will make it into the Best Picture category come Oscar nominations. It’s a tough thing to determine. If the BP category was the same format as the last two years, I wouldn’t have a doubt in my mind. Unfortunately, (for Potter, anyway) there can now be anywhere between 6-10 nominees, depending on how many Academy members put the film in their #1 spot on their ballot. Many people have argued that they can’t see many Academy members putting Potter in their top spot of the year. I have to agree. However, that’s what the campaign is for.
